MOORPARK, Calif. — A Moorpark man has been sentenced to 11 years in state prison for causing the death of his girlfriend inside a hotel room in 2020, according to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office.
Prosecutors said William Justin Koznar, 38, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the death of 36‑year‑old Sara Marie Goodwin. The incident occurred on October 7, 2020, inside a room at the Fairfield Inn & Suites in Moorpark.
Police responded to the hotel after staff reported Koznar’s aggressive behavior. Officers found Goodwin unresponsive with head injuries. She was taken to a hospital, where she died.
According to the District Attorney’s Office, Koznar was arrested based on his statements and hotel surveillance footage showing no one else entered the room during the relevant time period.
The sentencing was also reported by the Ventura County Star, KEYT, and KTLA, each confirming the same core details: the guilty plea, the voluntary manslaughter conviction, Goodwin’s identity, and the 11‑year prison term.
The District Attorney’s Office said the resolution provides finality for the victim’s family.
