Authorities in Modena, Italy say four bystanders intervened after a car drove onto a sidewalk and struck several pedestrians on Via Emilia Centro, one of the city’s busiest streets. The incident occurred Saturday afternoon during a period of heavy foot traffic, according to statements from local officials.
Police report that the driver exited the vehicle after the crash and attempted to flee while holding a knife. Four people nearby pursued and restrained him until officers arrived. Authorities say the driver was holding the knife as he tried to escape, and investigators are reviewing reports that one of the people who intervened may have been hurt during the struggle.
Emergency crews transported eight people to area hospitals, including several in critical condition. Regional health officials said some victims required advanced trauma care following the impact.
Investigators say the driver is a 31‑year‑old Italian citizen who had previous contact with local mental‑health services. Officials emphasized that early findings point toward a possible mental‑health‑related episode, and national authorities have stated that no evidence of terrorism has been confirmed at this stage.
Modena’s mayor publicly thanked the bystanders for their quick actions, noting that their intervention likely prevented additional injuries. Italy’s prime minister also issued a statement expressing support for the victims and acknowledging the efforts of first responders and residents who assisted.
The investigation remains active as police review surveillance footage, witness accounts, and the driver’s medical history.
