A state of emergency remains in effect in Southern California as crews continue working to stabilize an overheated chemical tank at the GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove. The incident has prompted widespread evacuations and an ongoing multi‑agency response due to the risk of a chemical release or explosion involving methyl methacrylate, a highly flammable industrial liquid.
Officials reported that the tank contains approximately 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate. The chemical began overheating on Thursday, with internal temperatures rising from 77 degrees to 90 degrees despite continuous cooling efforts. Fire officials said the tank cannot be safely secured, leaving the possibility of either a significant spill or a thermal event that could affect nearby storage tanks.
Evacuation orders currently cover an estimated 40,000 to 50,000 residents in Garden Grove and surrounding neighborhoods. Authorities expanded the evacuation zones as conditions evolved, noting that vapors from the chemical are heavier than air and could settle close to the ground if released. Several shelters have opened to support displaced residents, and schools in the area have adjusted schedules or canceled outdoor activities.
Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency to provide additional resources and support to local responders. Hazardous materials teams, fire crews, and chemical specialists are working to cool the tank and assess remaining options. Officials also released updated maps outlining potential blast zones and areas that could be affected by airborne exposure.
Methyl methacrylate is commonly used in the production of acrylic plastics, resins, and adhesives. Health officials warn that exposure can irritate the eyes, skin, and respiratory system, with higher concentrations posing more serious risks. Authorities continue urging residents to follow evacuation orders and avoid the affected area while crews work to prevent a large‑scale release.
