Utah Crews Respond to Christy Lane Wildfire as Separate Prescribed Burn Sends Smoke Over Wasatch Front

Fire crews in Iron County continued working Monday to contain the Christy Lane Fire, a small but fast‑moving wildfire that prompted evacuations southwest of Parowan. The fire was first reported near the Red Canyon subdivision, where deputies issued evacuation orders as a precaution while crews worked to slow the flames. Officials said the fire burned an estimated 15 acres and was human‑caused, though the specific ignition source remains under investigation.

Evacuees were directed to Cedar City High School while firefighters focused on protecting nearby structures. Fire activity decreased overnight, allowing crews to strengthen containment lines and monitor remaining hot spots. Officials said additional updates will be released as crews reassess conditions throughout the day.

While the Christy Lane Fire drew emergency response in southern Utah, residents along the Wasatch Front reported visible smoke from an unrelated event. The Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands confirmed that the Turpin Fire, a prescribed burn near Bountiful, was producing smoke across parts of Davis and Salt Lake counties. The project is designed to remove invasive phragmites and may cover up to 1,500 acres under controlled conditions.

Officials emphasized that the Turpin Fire is not a wildfire and asked the public not to report the smoke. Crews are monitoring the burn to ensure it remains within planned boundaries.

With one active wildfire and a large prescribed burn occurring on the same day, state fire managers urged residents to follow local alerts and remain aware of changing conditions as Utah enters the early stages of its 2026 fire season.
