A large‑scale recovery operation is underway in Dallas after a gas‑related explosion destroyed a two‑story apartment building in the Oak Cliff area, leaving three people dead and several others injured. Dallas Fire‑Rescue officials say the blast occurred early Wednesday afternoon as crews were responding to reports of a gas leak at the complex.
Firefighters arrived shortly before 1 p.m. and were assessing the scene when the explosion erupted, triggering a five‑alarm response and sending heavy smoke across the neighborhood. The force of the blast collapsed much of the structure, scattered debris across nearby properties, and damaged surrounding buildings.
Authorities confirmed that two adult women and one child were found deceased within the debris field. At least five additional residents were transported to local hospitals, including one person listed in critical but stable condition. Others with minor injuries sought treatment on their own.
Atmos Energy reported that a construction crew working in the area struck a natural gas pipeline shortly before the explosion. Investigators are continuing to examine the sequence of events, and officials say the final cause determination may take time.
Dallas Fire‑Rescue has transitioned from rescue to recovery operations, noting that roughly one‑third of the debris has been searched. Heavy equipment is being brought in to safely access collapsed sections of the building. Officials cautioned that the number of confirmed fatalities could rise as the search progresses.
The City of Dallas has arranged temporary housing for displaced residents and opened a family assistance center at a nearby high school. Mayor Eric Johnson expressed condolences to the families affected and thanked first responders for their work during the prolonged operation.
