Trump Approves Emergency Declaration for Orange County Chemical Leak, Newsom Says

President Donald Trump has approved California’s request for a federal emergency declaration to support the ongoing response to the chemical leak in Orange County, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced. The approval follows several days of intensive work by state and local agencies to stabilize a damaged tank containing methyl methacrylate at an industrial facility in Garden Grove.

State officials said the declaration enables FEMA to provide direct federal assistance, including personnel, equipment, and technical support. More than 785 state and local emergency responders have been deployed as crews continue monitoring the tank and surrounding area. The incident began when the tank overheated and released hazardous vapors, prompting evacuation orders across multiple communities.

The California Governor’s Office reported that the risk of a major explosion has been reduced, though public health and environmental concerns remain. Evacuation orders affecting tens of thousands of residents remain in place while air monitoring and stabilization work continues. State agencies have also made additional shelter sites and resources available to support displaced residents.

KTLA reported that the state of emergency was first declared at the county level as crews worked to assess the leak and manage the potential for further chemical release. FOX40 and Total News both noted that the federal declaration strengthens the coordinated response already underway, allowing federal resources to integrate directly with state and local operations.

Newsom said California acted early to protect communities and emphasized that the federal approval enhances the state’s ability to maintain a unified response. Officials have not provided a timeline for lifting evacuation orders, and response teams continue to monitor conditions around the facility.
