Lithium‑Ion Battery Ignites Garbage Truck Near Sacramento

A lithium‑ion battery thrown into household trash ignited inside a garbage truck in the Sacramento region, prompting renewed warnings from local officials about improper battery disposal.

According to ABC News, the incident occurred when a battery was compacted during routine collection, sparking a fire in the truck’s load. Crews responded quickly, but officials emphasized that these fires pose significant risks to drivers, equipment, and nearby neighborhoods.

The City of Roseville Utilities also reported that similar battery‑triggered garbage‑truck fires have occurred multiple times this year, underscoring the growing danger posed by discarded rechargeable batteries. Officials stressed that lithium‑ion batteries from devices such as power tools, laptops, e‑bikes, and phones must not be placed in trash or recycling carts.
