A shooting near the White House on Saturday evening led to a rapid security response, a temporary lockdown of the complex, and two people hospitalized, according to multiple news outlets and federal officials.
D.C. police and the U.S. Secret Service responded shortly after 6 p.m. ET to reports of gunfire near the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and 17th Street Northwest. Journalists on the North Lawn reported hearing what sounded like dozens of shots before being directed to shelter inside the White House press briefing room.
According to FOX News, a gunman fired toward the White House before being shot by Secret Service officers. A bystander was also struck during the exchange and taken to the hospital. Officials said the suspect never breached the White House perimeter.
The White House was placed on lockdown as armed agents secured the grounds. Reporters shared video showing Secret Service personnel moving across the North Lawn as the area was cleared. The lockdown was lifted roughly an hour later after agents established control of the scene.
